International Women Day at Hitachi Solutions
International Women’s Day is more than a celebration—it’s a call to action. This year’s theme, „Accelerate Action“, reminds us that progress toward gender equality requires bold steps, not just words.
At Hitachi Solutions Europe, we recognise the strength, resilience, and achievements of the incredible women in our organisation. They come from different backgrounds, professions, and cultures, but they all share a common experience: navigating biases and barriers in their careers.
In this special feature, they share their personal stories and answer one important question: „What’s a bias or barrier you’ve encountered in your career, and how can we accelerate change to remove it?“
Their voices matter. Their experiences inspire. Because change starts when we listen—and act.
A bias I’ve encountered is that empathy, vulnerability, and compassion (often seen as more feminine) are considered weaknesses. I’ve found that a leader who can approach vulnerability with empathy and show compassion, especially in the face of setbacks or mistakes, builds trust in the toughest moments. It’s the leadership that turns challenges into valuable learning opportunities and creates a team where employees don’t just fit in but truly belong.

One bias I often face as a mother is the assumption that productivity requires strict office hours. Promoting flexible work policies allows women like me to balance professional responsibilities and motherhood. By recognising the dual role of mothers, we can create a more supportive and productive work environment for all.

I have never experienced any barriers for being a woman in my career. The environment, both in and outside Portugal, has always been diverse and respectful. To remove barriers for others, we can focus on inclusion through education, awareness programs, open dialogue, and providing mentorship.

During my career, starting a family limited my progress, as I couldn’t extend my working hours. Companies should help fathers balance work and family life, indirectly benefiting women.

„You’re too young and inexperienced—you can’t do this.
A bias many women face early in their careers. The key? Trust and support. At Hitachi Solutions, mentoring and personal development plans empower young talents to take responsibility and grow. Because here, you don’t fall, you only learn.
