Hitachi set to achieve carbon neutrality throughout Value Chain by 2050

Hitachi’s carbon-neutrality goal for 2050 has now been set and it will cover the entire value chain, including production, procurement and the use of products and services.

Hitachi’s mission is to contribute to society through the development of superior, original technology and products while resolving social issues by promoting innovative solutions, accelerating collaborative creation with partners and stakeholders, and further integrating social and environmental responsibility into business activities.

Hitachi envision a low-carbon society, a resource-efficient society, and a harmonized society with nature. To this end, we will endeavour to reduce CO2 emissions, use water and other resources efficiently, and minimize impacts on natural capital throughout our value chain.

In a continued push to achieve our environmental strategy, Hitachi’s carbon-neutrality goal has been set for 2050 and it will cover the entire value chain, including production, procurement and the use of products and services. It builds on our existing commitment to make all of our offices and factories carbon neutral globally by 2030.

The new goal strengthens our previous commitment to deliver an 80% reduction in emissions by 2050, which was set back in 2016.

To help deliver the goal of carbon neutrality, Hitachi will invest around €10bn over a three-year period on R&D technologies that decarbonise through digital innovation. Solutions earmarked for backing investment include high-efficiency digital products, energy management systems and hydrogen technologies.

Hitachi’s Chief Environmental Officer Alistair Dormer said: „We already had science-based carbon emission targets, but these new targets underline our commitment to pass on a prosperous planet to future generations. Digital technology has a key role to play in helping society reach Net Zero and today’s announcement is another sign of Hitachi’s commitment.

“As a Principal Partner of COP26 and a social, purposeful business, we need to do much more than put our own house in order. Green technology in a digital world is a real engine for growth and it’s an exciting time to help cities, governments and companies cut carbon whilst accelerating our own potential as a climate change innovator.”

Hitachi has already joined the UN’s Race to Zero campaign through the Business Ambition for 1.5C, aligning our business with the most ambitious aim of the Paris Agreement – to limit global temperature rise to 1.5degC above preindustrial levels.
